Default The real deal on the ECT sensor on the AAH.

I needed to replace the ECT sensor on my 94 100CSq. What I found were quit a few misnomers about this proceedure. The tech article for the A4 really does not apply to my vehicle. The location, type of sensor(blue or green), and part numbers are not for the earlier 12V

This the location of the ECT sensor. It is the sensor without it's connector to the right of the cooling system bleed screw. This is all located in back of the left(drivers side) cylinder head.

This is the sensor my car actually used. It is Audi part #026-906-161. when I gave that number to the parts store, it was converted to the Bosch part number you see in the photo. The dealer wanted around $50, and the independant car parts store was $41. This sensor is threaded and has a 19mm bolt. All the World Pac sites I visited did not have this part available. They all came upwith the blue sensor for my vehicle.

To replace, I first disconneted the connector. It is the type that has to have the wire depressed before removing. The sensor is located in a hard to reach area, so be patient and have the engine cool before attempting. A medium, or deep 19mm, will work with at least a 6" extension to get to the sensor. You may have to carefully push, not force, some other connectors to the side. The metal bracket that holds them is somewhat flexible and can be moved a little to allow the the socket to enter. The sensor is not seriously torqued in and mine was removed very easily.

Since the position of the sensor is awkward, I tried to start by hand threading it. Dropping the sensor during this time could result in losing it, there are many crevaces it can fall into. Luckily I was able to retreve mine every time. Once the threading begins, use socket to finish. I cold not find the proper torque in Bentley, but it was fairly low.

Reconnect the connector, start engine and check for leaks. Take a test drive and check for leaks. Reseting the computer after doing this also a good idea.
