Default Does the clatter get faster and sorta dissappear with higher RPM? If so, could be lifter noise...

Try experimenting with a thicker oil. What oil do you use anyway? Hopefully not those 0W oils.

Yes, I'm running 0W40.
If it's noisy lifters, then why is the clattering slightly uneven at constant idle? It sounds more like a shot bearing. The clattering is drowned out by engine noise at RPM that is higher than idle.

Well, I'm not blowing blue smoke out of the exhaust. Lifters, maybe. I'm trying to find out more.
Now, stop finding pleasure in my confusion. ;-) Don't you have to shop for a new car? :-P

Default it's hard to diagnose without hearing it. A shot bearing will be louder at higher rpm and with

engine load. And it will get louder and louder within a few hundred miles.

A noisy lifter (just one) indicates that it is probably sticking in a compressed state so there is a lot of gap between the cam, the lifter and the valve so it clatters when the lifter hits the valve head as the cam pushes it down.

Noisy lifters (random all over the place) mean the oil is too thin and there is not enough viscosity to keep the lifters filled. Try 10w-40 and see if the noise dissappears. It gets worse on older cars so a thicker oil is necessary to provide a thick enough film between worn out moving parts. I use 15w-40 on my '92 SUV as it runs like **** with 5w-30

Default Hmm...

The 0W40 is a 40 weight oil when hot. I don't think the 15W40 will be thicker when hot, unless the 0W40 is really a 5W30 (which it probably is).
The clatter occurs at idle when the engine is cold or hot.
Anyway, so you are saying that valve lifter noise is actually random? Does that point to worn camshaft lobes, worn lifters, or both?

Default I don't quite trust the very wide multi viscosity oils because all they have is modifiers from a

base weight. I haven't compared viscosity vs temperature of the two, and then relate it back to our engine temps to see how the oil actually behaves. I've seen 0w of course at room temp, and it looks like water to me. I can't see it get thicker when heated, and I can't see a synthetic 5w-30 get as thin as it when heated either.

Anyway, it's your call if you want to try changing the oil first before dissecting the engine.

The lifters usually give out first, although cams do get round (loose the lobe) over time. Lifters are just like two cups (one larger than the other) with oil in between.

Default Well the 0W is really a 5W

There is no true 0W oil.
Anyway, even if a thicker oil might help, it still seems something is worn too much.
I'll look into it (tracking the source of the noise) before I do anything. I'll post again about it as soon as I find something out.

I was just there...I actually just got the car back today.

Now its time to patiently drive the car around for a few months while I get a smokin deal from a salesperson eager to sell

Shoulda asked the rental car girl out while I was there....something about writing an $1100 check seems to stifle my game.

Default I've read 0W is more like '2' since you're right, there is no such thing as 0 secs of flow. 5 is

like 4-9 or something like that.
