Default Crazy is right. Humming is a 90% wheel bearing. The rear is so easy a 7 year old could do it.

All you have to do is take the tire off, pop off the center cap on the hub and pull the two bearings out. Get some lithium based grease and lube them up and replace. There is an inner and outer on each side. Both are in the hub behind the cap. For both bearings each side will run you $10-$15. Of course I'm assuming your talking about the rear wheels. If the sound is coming from the front and disapears when you turn the wheel slightly, it is your front bearing. In which case shop around (It needs to be pressed in so It's really not a DIY like the rear.

Default Unless you are very very thin, yes.

Make sure the car is level. The differential must be filled with oil reaching up to the filler hole. Simply stick your finger in. :-P

The humming noise may well be a rear wheel bearing, but make sure there's enough gear oil in the differential. Bearing damage in the differential can cause humming and whining.

I still have that droning noise coming from the right front and I am 90% sure it's the wheel bearing. The noise does not change with less or more load (turning left/right), though. I'm waiting for it to get louder or until I can feel play in the bearing. :-\

Default does the bearing damage in the rear diff happen?

I only have the sound at low speeds. It doesnt sound like a regular wheel bearing.

My left front bearing was totally shot, the sound from it didnt even change with or without load on it.

Default It does happen, but I don't think it's a common issue with Audis

Maybe Quattro Frog replaced his rear differential a couple years ago?

Default rear wheel bearing needs to be pressed in as well FYI...

at least to the best of my knowledge. just had a shop do it for me a few weeks back.

I pulled the hub assembly out of the car and brought it to them... not too difficult honestly, just a PITA

Yes, the rear bearings on an A4 Quattro need to be pressed in. I've had both replaced.

Quick Reply: so my rear differential is leaking btw the center and left shaft...I'm also getting a humming sound
