I'm listing only the good ones.
Bosch (domestic Bosch sucks)
Mann (&Hummel)
Mahle
Mobil 1
Knecht
OEM VW/Audi Langzeitfilter
Napa Gold
My top choices are OEM, Mann, Mahle, or Mobil 1. Stay away from Orange Death (FRAM). As for the correct part number, you'll have to check what's correct for your model year, or what options you have.
The VW/Audi filter for my '96 with the AFC has part number 078-115-561-J. At this time I'm using an M1 301.
Auto parts stores have nifty brochures with cross reference numbers.

it's made by Hastings, IIRC, but it uses a custom synthetic filter element ("special cellulose, synthetic and glass blend media") designed for extended oil change intervals of 12,500 miles. I bought one and tried it on my wife's 30v. WOW, did it keep the oil clean versus the OEM recommended Mann/Mahle filter. Now, granted, I went with a slightly oversize filter, but, damn, I checked the oil at the VAG recommended 8000 miles interval for that engine and it still looked like honey! I ended up going over 12,000 miles on it before I felt obligated to change it by mileage alone. So, the more I use Amsoil products in my Audis and my relatives Mercedes-Benz's (four vehicles in all), the more they impress me. I have an Amsoil by-pass oil filtering system that will go into my A4 once it gets going.
Good news, on my A4 rebuild: tranny is in, engine 99% complete on the stand. We are still debating where to route the dip stick tube as we earlier relocated it from the OEM route which appeared to have arched with the rear alternator bolt. However, that caused it to run too close to the header. Additionally, Audi, in all of its wisdom, put the dip stick directly infront of the access path of that alternator bolt--just too damn close down there; you cannot change the alternator without a lot of trouble. I think I want to try to put an electrical insulator around that part of the dip stick tube and put it back into a route close to that of the OEM route. However, there exist compromises with this idea too. So often, little things slow you down.
Besides that, we await a ground shipment of a new flywheel--which should have come earlier in the week, and we need to install an "extra" besides the Amsoil by-pass filter system.

with a 4 month old baby, an intelligent yet stubborn 4 year old kid that challenges me to my wits end, a crazy office in which I could clone myself four times over and still work over 60 hours a week, and trying to improve my less than perfect health all add up bigger priorities than brining my camera with me (low man on the totem pole of life).
I will try to get some photos next week before the engine goes in.
