Default Thermostat

Can anyone help?
I am in the U.K and have an Audi A6 2.6 SE Auto 6cyl with A/C June1996 (previous body to current).
As servicing is expensive here I am going to change out the Coolant and also the Thermostat.
My problem is that I cannot locate where the Thermostat is.
Can anybody point me in the right direction, with Pic if poss?

Many thanks

Default Re: Thermostat This should get you close.

Check out my picture poster for pic's related to your question.

Cooling system, servicing

Notes: Always replace seals and gaskets.
The thermostat can be replaced without removing the camshaft drive belt.
An oil cooler, mounted between the oil filter and the oil filter bracket, is part of coolant system. Seal - always replace
Thermostat, replacing
- Remove ribbed belt.
- Drain coolant.
- Remove toothed belt guard.
Note: It is not necessary to remove the toothed camshaft drive belt to remove the thermostat.
- Remove thermostat housing from under drive belt cover.
Installation position of thermostat. Vent valve must be installed facing up.

Cooling system leaks, checking

WARNING!
The cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. When opening the expansion tank, wear gloves and other appropriate protection, cover the cap with a cloth, and open carefully to relieve system pressure slowly.

Cooling system, draining and filling

Notes: The cooling system is filled year round with a mixture of water and G11 anti-freeze. G11 and coolant additives marked "In accordance with TL VW 774 A" prevent freezing, corrosion damage, scale formation and raises the coolant's boiling point.

The high boiling point of the coolant mixture improves engine efficiency when the engine is operating at full load, particularly in tropical climates.

Draining - Drain coolant from engine drain plug, and at drain plug on bottom left of radiator. Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
- Remove expansion tank cap.

Filling - Recommended mixing ratios for 11 liter (11.6 qt.) capacity:

Protection down to:
Volume of G11
Volume of water

-25C (-13F)
4.4 liter (4.7 qt.)
6.6 liter (7.0 qt.)

-35C (-31F) 1)
5.5 liter (5.8 qt.)
5.5 liter (5.8 qt.)

- Open bleeder screw in coolant hose to heater core approx. two turns.
- Open bleeder screw (approx. two turns) in large coolant pipe, near engine coolant temperature sensor page 19-4 .
- Add coolant to expansion tank.
- Close bleeder screws when coolant starts to run out.
- Fill expansion tank until level reaches top edge, then install cap on expansion tank.
- Run engine at idle until coolant fan has switched on at least once.
- Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM for approx. 30 seconds.
- Stop engine (switch ignition off), and check coolant level in expansion tank.
- Top up to MAX mark if necessary.

Default Yes after you remove the ribbed belt...

two bolts (#3) change the thermostat and seal and pop it back together. You have two belts,
1) Ribbed belt - driven by the crank goes around the alternator, and AC compressor.
2) Timing belt - Driven by the crank again but goes around water pump and cam gears. Don't remove the timing belt because you don't have to! It's easy to get to the thermostat after the ribbed belt is out of the way. If you can buy the Bentley, Cheap investment if you're doing you own work!

Default You may also use the newer "pinkish" G12 coolant--just do not mix the blueish G11 with it.

or anything else with it, except distilled water.
