Thermostat Options
I'm going to replace mine (joy) this weekend and I'm not sure which one to use. GermanAutoParts.com lists three options for my 1997 12V.
Standard temp - 87 C
Low temp - 80 C
High temp - 92 C
Naturally I'm thinking the Standard Temp is the one to choose, but can someone tell me why I might choose one of the others?

Depends on where you live and the ambient temp outside
I live in the northeast, but I do a decent amount of city driving, on the highway you'll notice a small difference btw say a 80 and a 87 degree tstat. But in the city, my temp gauge will hit halfway in five minutes and even go a little past with a 87 tstat, but with the 80 it stays at half or less, even when running the a/c.
My suggestion, if you live somewhere cold keep the 87, you could switch to a 80 in the summer if you like (thats what I do), if you live in Florida or Arizona , then I would consider going to a 80. If you live in Alaska, well then the 92 would be for you.

Location. Live in Arizona, get a colder one. Live in Iceland, get hotter one. ;O)
What I've found is you often have to change the rad fan thermo as well, inorder to take advantage of the different thermostat, based on your location.

Thanks for the great replies all....
I live in Seattle where the temps area almost always between 30F and 90F, and those are infrequent seasonal temps. I do ski often so I'm in the mountains upwards of 30 times a year, but usually only for a few hours on the way up and back (car is off when skiing of course). I'm guessing I should just stick with the standard temp thermo.
tozoA8 - does all that info about auto tranny fluid apply to manual as well?

It will be easier to put the car in service postion to
Do this repair. In other words, the front bumper has to come off and the radiator support moved forward...
But if you have small hands and enough tools, you might be able to get away without doing this, but I figure it will be a pain in the buttocks.

Yes, a little sarcastic.

I took the whole front end off of my car to do this (I have never done it before), and it took me a while. I removed the front bumper, then the PS cooler, then the AC condensor, then the lock carrier (I think that is what it is called). I have an automatic, so my transmission cooler is also connected to my radiator, a big PITA. I followed the tech article for changing the timing belt for the 1.8t to help me get my bumper and everything else off. Then I could pretty much figure it out from there. This pic will probably help.
