Ticking noise follow up

I recently posted about a ticking noise heard on my 97 A4 purchased this week. At first, I thought that the noise was coming from the engine because it matches RPM speed. However, I also noted that the noise only occurred when in neutral or in first gear.
The new development is that I discovered the noise disappears when I put the clutch in. I'm almost positive the noise has something to do with clutch engagement because I can hear whatever is making the noise spin down and stop immediately after I push the clutch in. The other strange thing is that it is loudest when driving in first gear but is BARELY there, if at all, in any other gear.
Anybody have any ideas/suggestions?

Not sure what it is but my '02 3.0Q 6sp has it at lower speeds ONLY when not in gear and rolling idle. Its like a light rattling sound and to my knowledge I've seen others posting it too...

See, what bothers me is that it is VERY audible when accelerating in first gear, to the point that I almost always shift to second early in order make the noise go away.
