What is the chance of removing the oil pump without damage to the upper oil pan gasket?...

I want to avoid the engine lifting as I don't have any equipment for this.
Thanks!

I've done it twice on my 93 90s.
Replace the gasket behind the oil pump and use quality gasket maker like permatex black where the pump mates up to the pan.
good luck

I should just remove the visible part of it and clean the visible upper pan surface, then apply the gasket making compound, place the new oil pump gasket and install the oil pump?
I guess the answer is "no", but have you had any leaks from this improvised gasket and how hard was it to remove the oil pump the second time when you did the job?
Thank you! I fill more confident about starting this repair now.

No, my upper pan gasket was not damaged at all. I just added some permatex black for added insurance against leaks. You have to be careful when sliding the pump over the shaft as the clearance is tight.
Be careful with the front crank seal. Lubricate it so you won't tear it as you slide it on the shaft.

oil pump has some black rubber-like compound between it and the engine block, so probably it was removed before. I just hope that it will not be stuck to the upper pan gasket if someone used some permatex or other sticky hardening compound before, because forcing the pump out may tear the upper pan gasket and then it will become complicated.
Thanks for your help Maineman!

a 1/4 drive, ratchet and tiny socket to reach it. However this is what I found for AFC motor and I don't know if it will be the same for AAH.
Mine is AAH.
Below are some pictures made by kday, don't know if from AFC or AAH motor. Looks like the contact surface between the oil pump and the upper oil pan is actually all the base of the pump. I expected it to be only the edge of the pump. However more surface may mean that the upper oil pan gasket will be harder to damage or tear.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a6100/msgs/76443.phtml</a
