I have a '96 A4 that it appears I need to replace the engine. On a locater website it asks if it is thru VIN 129646 or from VIN 129647. I am assuming that is the last six digits of the VIN. Anyone no the difference? I can find the thru 129646 engine a whole lot closer to my location but my car is way past the cut off.

So the difference is the engine code? So I need to locate the identifier on my engine and shoot for that same thing? If that is the case I am a little confused by the parts locater site because they list AFC engine codes in both the pre and post cut-off number. If I get a matching code engine is that all I need to worry about? What do I need to ask the bone yard to make sure I am not chasing after a headache (at least as far as compatibility
I did not see an identifier for the ACK version on your website, does that apply to my era? Thanks for your help!

a newer motor management system (MMS). Early AFC engines have the MMS 400 that doesn't inlcude the secondary air pump system, and have aluminum (silver) valve covers. Later AFC engines have MMS 411 with the secondary air pump and plastic (black) valve covers. If you have MMS 411, then you need to locate an AFC engine of the same because of the ECU works with the newer emission controls (e.g., secondary air pump). AFC engines were also used in '96 and '97 A6s, which will also work in your A4.

I put a A4 AFC (i'm assuming) into my 95' cab.
Should i be worried about compatibility?
I didn't change the ECU or anything......
The old engine had the silver valve covers and the new one has the black plastic.
I've been trying to track down some EGR and fuel rail problems, but could these CEL lights have to do with some incompatibilities between the old ECU and the new engine?
thanks for you thoughts.....
