Default My tranny main shaft bearing went bad in the past

Sounded like a turbine spooling up in second gear when accelerating.
If your dad overfilled the tranny or the differential, the fluid may have started foaming, which can result in damage. What fluid did he use?

GL5 is a big no-no in the tranny. Fine for FD but tranny should be GL4

Default great!!...should i drain it and refill with gl4, and see if it quiets down, or...

is that probably not the problem? If i have had the GL5 in there for 2 weeks could anything be damaged? Why cant you use gl5 for both? Thanks

Default The current GL-5 will most likely not do harm

... as modern GL-5 fluids are generally safe for brass synchros, at least at normal operating temperatures. Mobil states their GL-5 is safe for brass and other yellow metal alloys. Red Line claims synchro wear (corrosive wear) can be 50% (I think) higher with GL-5 in a tranny that requires GL-4. I use Red Line MT-90, which is GL-4, because I like to be on the safe side.

The noise you hear sounds more like a bad bearing than failing synchros, correct?

Default no, i wouldnt describe it as a bad bearing noise, more like a soft grinding...

or like i stated in my original post, like sticking a pencil in a spinning fan. I stoppped at autozone after work tonight and got some gear oil that says that it is good for gl5, gl4, and gl3, but for limited slip dif's it is only for top offs. Any other idears?

Default A chipped gear maybe?

You didn't get to see the old tranny fluid, did you? You should have checked for metal flakes and bits and pieces of metal. Changing the fluid again won't hurt, but it might not help either. If you decide to change it again, look for debris in the fluid. I also suggest you use GL-4 fluid, just to be safe. But if the tranny is already damaged, a fluid change won't fix it.
