'09 A3 2.0T Oil change filter issue

So, I haven't changed my oil in a few years, as I had the maintenance plan on my old A3. Decided to jump right in to this with no background or anything. 5 qts of 502 oil and a filter, all you need, right?
So I drain the oil, take the filter off, have everything cleaned up, ready to go back together...Grab the new filter, lube up the seal, walk over to the engine compartment and I've got an oil filter in my hand with a male thread and a male thread coming off the oil filter housing...not gonna work.
So immediately I assume this is the dealers fault and they gave me the wrong filter, pissed. It's saturday, they're closed. I call around to every autoparts store around, find one with the filter. Bike over, it's the same one, male thread. So I go online, same thing, male thread.
I start to do some research online, and can't find a definite answer. What I do believe is that there is a male-male threaded coupling that is threaded into the oil filter, and this did not come off with the filter I pulled. Is this correct/possible? There is also the plastic disc with 4 "spokes" still on the housing. Not willing to throw a wrench on the male thread coming off the car if that is actually welded on and permanent, and something else is going on here.
Let me know if ya need some pictures.
