Default 2006 A3 oil pressure light

Hi all, hopefully this is the right forum for this question. My son has a 2006 A3 with the 2.0t FSI. I bought the car cheap with an exploded clutch, fixed that and went through the whole car. We did a whole lot of deferred maintenance and addressed every error code that came up in VAG-COM, as well as rebuilt suspension, tires, etc. It only has 113k miles on it and runs great, been a great car for the last 6 months. This morning he told me that for the last couple of months the red oil light comes on and flashes for a couple minutes when he first starts driving, then it goes away. At first it only happened now and then, but lately he said it's happening every time. Notwithstanding the fact that he's an idiot and apparently didn't pay attention to me when I said "red lights flashing are bad," I'm trying to figure out the failure here. The oil level is full, when the car is running and the light is flashing there is no oil on the dipstick, which is telling me that the oil pump is working and circulating it through the engine. The engine runs great, no funny sounds, runs strong, etc. My gut tells me that this is a failed sensor, but wanted to see if there's a way to check oil pressure/circulation status via my VAG-COM, or any other ideas before I just start throwing parts at the car.
