Post Update on my 2.0T oil consumption lawsuit against Volkwagen Group of America, Inc.

Audi Family,

I wanted to update you on my efforts to resolve my oil consumption issues on my 2.0T Audi A6 which began around 85K miles and now requires me to add a quart of oil to my engine every 400 miles.

As you may know, a lawsuit has been filed on July 2021 against Volkswagen alleging that 2012-2017 2.0T engines have a piston defect that requires premature replacement of the pistons due to excessive oil consumption. I do not have time to wait for this lawsuit to be resolved as I am being forced to either repair the engine or buy a new car as I am having to add a quart now every 400 miles and the issue is progressively worsening.

As part of a potential settlement, I expect VW to limit their liability as much as possible, which may exclude me from the class, or limit my ability to get reimbursed 100%. I also tried to work with VW directly in good faith to resolve this issue, however, they do not want to accept responsibility for the matter to limit their liability which will limit my willingness to buy another VW/Audi vehicle.

Hence, I filed a small claims lawsuit against Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. by looking up their registered agent in North Carolina's secretary of state, filing a small claims case, and having them served by certified mail to that address. I then used my local Audi dealer to diagnose that the pistons were at fault by having them conduct the oil consumption test, and substantiate the damages by providing me a written estimate ($6500) to have the pistons replaced.

The remaining component is that you must prove that having to prematurely replace the pistons was a design defect. Thus, I subpoenaed the Audi service advisor to court and will ask him questions under oath as to the number of cars coming into his dealership with oil consumption issues, and what he thinks is the root cause of the problem to substantiate that there is a high number of vehicles having these oil consumption issues compared to other engine models. I also have perfect records and have maintained my car at the recommended service intervals recommended by Audi. I also plan to provide a copy of the lawsuit that was filed in July 2021 to the Judge as it goes into extensive detail substantiating that this is a design defect, and VW knew about it and did not disclose it to their customers at the time of purchase.

We go to court on May 18th, 2023 in Mecklenburg County Courthouse which is in Charlotte, NC. I received a letter from VW's attorneys on 5/6 trying to thwart me from proceeding further. I will keep everyone posted on the outcome of my lawsuit and hope this communication helps you if you are in a similar situation and are being led to believe that buying a $57K vehicle and having to replace your pistons for $6500 around 100k miles is "normal".

Nice. I sued Citibank once and won the case in small claims court. They also tried to contact me before the court and settle for a fraction of what my claim was, I rejected.
Unfortunately took about 1 yeat for my court date to come up.

I have a 2016 Audi a5 with 85k miles. I am having to add a quart of oil every 300 miles. I went to Audi and they quoted me $10k to fix the piston rings. Truly unbelievable that they take no responsibility! Please let me know the outcome of your lawsuit.

I admire your courage and hope you will win this case. It is clear that the design flaw of the 2.0T was not fixed and the same defect is in latest 2.0T engines as well. I live in Africa and I came across several cases of poor people who imported a 2012 - 2017 used Q5 to realize that the engine is an oil drinker and to start having compression issues shortly after purchase. One of my colleagues ended up with a damaged cylinder head and a broken valve, not timing-related.

I would like to take the opportunity to inform people that the 3.0T V6 engine in the past generation A6, A7, Q7, S4, S5, SQ5 is having the exact same issue. I have posted the thread at the link below with details to let people know that this 3.0T is no different than the 2.0T people have been complaining about for years. I listed a couple of threads where people are reporting the issue and are having to struggle with the dealer to either have their engine rebuilt or replaced.

Angry 2015 Audi Q5 Oil Consumption Test

Hi Everyone,

I just got the "verdict" from the local Audi Dealership here in Ohio and the results of the Oil Consumption Test, performed at 85,000 miles, show that our 2015 Audi Q5 2T consumes 1.9 quarts per 1000 miles.
Audi explains that normal consumption is 1.0 quart per 1000 miles is to be expected.

Recommended Repair: Replace the pistons / engine repair.
Parts & Larbor: US$ 2,309 (Parts) + US $7,000 (40 Hours Labor) + Tax.

Audi Dealer Services, expects the consumption issue will worsen with additional miles driven, unless major engine repair is completed.

We also own a 2014 AUDI A6 with 65,000 miles and are starting to experience minor oil consumption issues, resulting in adding 1.0 quart of oil between regular oil changes intervals at 6,000 miles.
Based on what I have read in other threads, it is just a matter of time before our A6 will experience the same issues as the Q5.

I am very disappointed in the Audi brand and i will now start my search to replace both vehicles with a different brand.
For comparison we own a 2014 Infinity QX 80 with 215,000 miles and we do not have to add any oil between the regular 6,000 miles oil change intervals.

The Q5 described above is our 5th Audi, and I am officially done with Audi ! They are NOT what they used to be!

I just topped off my 09 Audi A4 with 3 quarts after 2200 miles. It seems to be getting worse. Best of luck to you, I would also get data and ask a Audi service organization that does not work for Audi testify.

Kudos to your patience and determination. I am a recent victim of Q5 engine failure (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q5-...e-50k-3061671/). I was given a quote for 12 grand to replace my broken engine ( 50K miles only). Audi + Dealership is covering 60% now. I am thinking of going your route as well.

Default Audi Q3 same oil consumption issue

I have a 2016 Audi Q3 (115k miles) that is now consuming 1-1.5 quart of oil every 600 miles. Anyone reading this actually able to fix the problem, even after costly piston repair? I don’t want to spend on getting another car because I’m fine with it otherwise so I’m wondering if I spend $6-10k on new pistons, is it basically like extending the life for another 50k miles or so?

also, any updates on the court case?
