Default 2.7t engine swap into porsche 914

I want to install a 2.7t into a 1975 porsche 914.

I'll be using the Audi 012 5 speed (front wheel drive) transmission (re-located to the rear).

I live in California and although the car (due to age) does not require smog checks, I want to make the swap as legal as possible. This rules out using the 034 stand-alone ECU.

I plan on buying a complete car for the engine and smog related items needed.

That all leads to the question as to what items are required to have the ECU system function without giving error codes.

Default I think you would be better off with the stand alone system.

You might call and talk to 034 or WMS etc to see if anyone has done this before.

Default Re: using standalone

Avant;

I live near Wicked and went in and talked to them about the project. Their suggestion, like yours, was to use the 034 stand-alone. (the 034 web site has complete "kits" with wiring loom for VW VR6's)

It would be the easiest way to go, but as stated in the original post, the smog laws here in California rule it out.

Default The Audi computer is so complicated.....

There is a guy that works with/for WMS that does programming and he may be able to help. It sounds like a great project. Who are you using to adapt the engine to the transaxle? Kennedy Engineered products makes adapters for vw/porsche transaxles. Do you have a complete donor car? If so, maybe you can just start removing components that you don't need one at a time and see what codes it starts throwing. Good luck and keep us informed.

Default transmission adapters not required

One of the driving reasons for chosing this particular engine is that it will bolt directly on a early porsche boxster (5 speed) transmission or Audi/VW 012 transmission (they are the same basic unit). Using the Audi transmission is very cost effective.

Kennedy does not make an adapter to put Audi engines on porsche or VW transmissions. It may be due to starter location complications.

They do make adapters for the nissan V6's, which is a good engine, but to get a strong porsche transmission you have to step up to the "915" due to the fact that the original transmission in the 914 (a 901 style) not being that strong. By the time you get a 915, do a re-build, and convert it for mid-engine installation you could be out close to 6 grand for just the transmission.

As for purchasing the Audi engine, I'm planning on locating a "totaled" car and take what I need. Then try to re-coupe some of the cost of the un-needed quatro stuff.

There is a VW with a 2.7 swapped in on the B5 S4 forum, I bet you could find that guy if you looked.

Default Late to the party but if you run into problems, another option might be...

a Subie Turbo flat-4 mated to VW's 091 (Vanagon) transaxle. This is a popular combo with the sand rail set and both engine and trans enjoy widespread aftermarket support. Good Luck.
