High-mileage 2.7T and oil grade choice

The Audi specified oil grade for the 2.7T (at least for 2001-2002) is 0W-30. The manual says you can also use 5W-30 or 5W-40 if that is not available. I've also read that people are also using 0W-40.
Now, for a high mileage, non-modified, 2.7T engine with 100,000 miles operating in the Mid-Atlantic states (i.e., hardly gets below 15 degrees F, or above 100 degrees F) would one of these 4 different grades be more desirable than the other? Is there any advantage/benefit to be gained by using a -40 over a -30 weight oil in a high-mileage engine?
Also, what about the so-called "high-mileage" full synthetic oils out there. Is there any real benefit to using them?
Finally, is there any benefit to using oils from companies like Red Line or Royal Purple (both have 5W-30, and 5W-40 weights), or Lucas Oil synthetics (which has 0W-30 and 5W-30 weights)
or just stick with Mobil One (or Valvoline or Castrol synthetics)? How about the German synthetic oil brands available at ECS Tuning and other places?

I never actually got a complete answer to my questions, but I think the basic message was that in the Mobil 1 line of oils, 0W-40 seems to be the best choice overall.

i have been curious of this as well. i live in oregon and the temp never gets about 80F and never below 20F. i have been running castrol syntec 5w30, and now am about to put in valvoline synpower 5w30 on my next change in my 2001 allroad 2.7t, 93,200 miles. i have asked around alot about this same issue on a few different forums and never really seem to get a clear response.
