Adaptation channels

Who has tried doing adjustments to the adaptation channels on a 30V 2.8? I've tried all 14 and the only ones I can change using the VAG is 1 - idle speed and 14-idle torque. All others give me an error if I try to change them. I'm wondering if this is due to my PES G1 chip or if all 2.8 chips are like this?

I mean, relatively speaking? I know that really most modifications aren't going to do wonders and add years to your engine's life...but, excuse me if I'm wrong, isn't lemmiwinks used to add degrees to your timing? Should I really be screwing with that?

i use it...as long as you dont do anything too drastic youre generaly fine (ie 10 deg timing ok, 25 not cool at all)

What exactly are the benefits of advancing the timing that much (I.e. 10 degrees) via lemmiwinks? I'd like to have a better understanding before I actually do something like that, and archive searches for "lemmiwinks" produce mainly commentary on gerbils.

advancing the timing creates a small overlap, on a 5v engine this allows more air to be packed into the cylinder, so fueling must also be increased to take advantage of it...this more or less creates a more powerful explosion, and creates more hp and tq...if you do do it it is more or less a game of guess and check to get the fueling right through watching the 02 sensors and seeing if they come back with +/- 3% (0 would be perfect but that is not possible. 0 would indicate a complete burn and no excess fuel in exhuast)...if you have any questions you can always email me

You said there are 14 channels, incl. timing. From what I've heard, but on the 1.8T's, even 10 degrees seems extreme...but it seems to be fine on our engines. Is there a way to really read up and see what the reasonable limits are, or is it just something you have to know from experience and gathered 'sense', something a newcomer to the concept of advancing timing and adjusting fuel feed should leave alone?

...ive herd of people in 4.2s running things like 17 deg but i started small (like 5 deg) and then slowly moved up, and keep in mind every is a new comer at some point...might be worth posting on a4 board if you want to know about 1.8's...for the most part people are really touch about giving you there #'s because they dont wanna be blamed if somthing goes wrong...but my 2.8 runs 12 deg no prob

And don't worry, I won't blame you if I decide to do something like (which is likely in the next few months) and something goes wrong.
I was just using the 1.8T response as an example; mainly trying to figure out if larger displacement = higher timing tolerance.
So how does this work? I get a VAG-COM, and then I download this program?
