Is it possible to replace the black cam plug at the back of the head.......

.......by just removing that cam retainer?
I'd really like to avoid any other work (i.e. entire cam removal, tensioner seals) that isn't needed.

You don't have to remove it , but its makes it much easier having everything out of the way. Just pull both seals(sensor seal o-ring & cam cap) out back there and press new ones in. I'd rather see you go that route then pulling just that end bearing cap. Its recommended if your pulling one bearing cap, they should all get pulled and retorqued within sequence. Take it for what its worth. If you do pull the end cap, have some factory sealant handy as well. I believe that ones gets a slight coating. I believe its the blue wurth dp300 stuff.
With most of the plumbing out of the way there , you should be able to install them without much fuss. If there is the slightest oil residue by the cam tensioners, replace them now while your where you are. Hope this helps.

I plan on going back in later to clean up the entire top end.
... so the cam plug just comes right out and presses in?
I had some Bentley writing here, but the more I read it, the more confused I get.
It doesn't help that the pictures they use are generic pictures and show the 1.8T.

Yes, it can be pressed in. The problem as people find is getting the proper angle and leverage to press them in. Bentley manuals are similar to Porsche, they kind of expect you've had factory tech training and done it a few dozen times. I just expect it. You should check out a factory Mazda or Toyota manual, you might be shocked at the level of intricate detail. Hope all goes well.

When I worked on them, my coworker and I would --while trying to remove.. say a 911 starter-- wax poetic about how we could write our own translation.
Instead of:
Remove main harness
How about:
Remove big honkin' red wire
Other translation issues I've found in the V8q factory manuals. Someone, at one time, misread the number 13 and wrote down 73. This could have been disasterous because it was a torque spec.
Germans draw their 1's with big heads, like American 7's, but cross their 7's to avoid confusion. The translater was unaware.

what's the easiest way to remove plug without purchasing factoy tool? Wood screw?

screwdriver through the hole you can see on the top side of that bearing cap (directly below your red arrow). Tap it gently and the seal pops out the back.

I think I either used some leverage on the back of it, or perhaps a pair of channel locks with a block of wood to protect both sides. I remember it going in pretty smoothly. Whatever I did, it hasn't leaked back there yet!
