Default Cam Tensioner Seals / Valve Cover Gaskets. Please Help!

Well I had a mechanic that was going to do the work for me, but he disappeared off the face of the earth. How difficult is this job? I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but after trying to yard the alternator out of this A4, I'm hesistant to even show a wrench to this car! Any advice, suggestions, DIY directions, and things to replace while in there is greatly appreciated.

Oh and the car in the sig is the car that needs the work. 99.5 A4 2.8 with 168k miles

Default When was the last time you did the timing belt?

Much easier when you the belt at the same time...really the cam adjuster seals should be done with every belt service anyway.

I just had the TB job done about 10k miles ago by Redmond European in Washington. I started to have the seal problem shortly after the service, but they informed me that the seals that are leaking are not replaced during the timing belt change. I didn't like the sound of another 750.00 job after just having the TB job, all coolant hoses, alternator, tires, and brakes just recently replaced.

Default Bummer.

That's a really bad policy on their part. It's kinda like saying that the timing belt isn't broken so you don't need to replace it.

You'll have very little room to get to the seals with the belt in place. Unless you are very comfortable with your hands, get some help.

I believe they are the cam tensioner seals. Not the actual cam seals. Those were replaced.

Default Its not that bad of a job, iirc it took me about an hr per side.

You will also need the special tool to compress the adjustor, about $20 i think.
Might want to replace spark plugs while you have some stuff out of the way.

here have a read of this<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1650707.phtml">Click</a></li></ul>

Default Yeah. I do all of them with the belt. If it was cam seals, the belt would have to come off.

With cam adjuster seals, you can work around the belt, but it isn't pretty or easy.

That's probably the best way to tackle it.
