Crankshaft locking.

Is there a way to lock the crankshaft? I need to uncrew the center bolt, in order to replace the crank seal. Everytime I try to unscrew the bolt, the entire shaft turns.

I will not attempt to replace the seal right now. The bentley manual does not specify what tool I need to lock crankshaft. It just says there to remove the bolt, the gear and "diamond" washer. I bought tools to remove/install the seal, but that's all I got for the crankshaft.

...you should have already locked the crank to remove the timing belt. Sounds to me like you are in over your head.
Is the timing belt on or off? Did you use the proper crank lock tool and cam lock tool to remove the belt?

I have already replaced the timig belt, rollerls, tensioner and water pump. I didn't use any tools to lock Cam Shafts or the crank shaft. I marked the cam wheels, crank gear with paint. After replacement all marks aligned perfectly fine. The engine is running the same way as before the replacement. No error codes in Vag-Com.

But without setting the cam timing using the tools, you've probably left some power and fuel effiency on the table.
The Bentley manual should tell you what tool to use. Are you reading the timing belt section?

I thought about power also, but so far I don't see any significant difference, if not to say no difference at all. If there was a way to test it with Vag-Com, I would be very curious to know it. The car accelerates the same way as before. In terms of fuel consumption, can't tell the difference either. I will closely monitor how much fuel is being taken.
Next time, when I attempt to replace that crank seal, I will gather all necessary tools to lock the crank and cams.

If it runs the same as before, you probably copied the previous install pretty well and the parts are similar. But who knows how close the timing was before you started? No trying to belabor the point or beat you up about it; I'm posting more as a PSA for those who have not done their belts yet.
No codes is good, but there is no way to check cam timing with VAG-COM.

I'm going to follow your advise and do the alignmnet the right way with tools. This is a crutial element in the engine and must be done right. Besides, it's better if I change that seal now, rather than later. I just wish the tools were available for rent for the 3.0L AVK engine.
