Default leak from oil pan

mine has lots of oil all over the oil pan, so I'm gonna replace gasket soon.
does it have two gaskets(upper and lower) or just one gasket?
Thanks!

Default It has 2, upper and lower. Lower can be done with engine in car, upper I'm not certain but I think

that requires some disassembly. Not sure if it means engine has to come out, but may be engine mounts need to be unbolted and/or subframe dropped. Upper oil pan leak ususally results in oil appearing on the tranny and at first glance seems like a possible RMS leak. If it is just oil on the lower pan where the temp sensor and drain plug is located, that is relatively simple. Good luck!

Default BTW, fix is not actually a gasket, per se, but rather sealant - there is a special Audi spec so you

may want to get that. My guess is that there is a generic equivalent, but you never know with these cars - they tend to run a lot hotter than dometics and may require an especially robust sealant formulation.

Default Upper can be done with the engine in the car

the mounts have to be unbolted and the engine has to be jacked up 2-3"

Default Thanks for great info!

anyone knows if there's write-up or tech info regarding upper pan sealant?

Default Both my upper and lower were done by dealer under warranty and sealant was used on both. There may

in fact be a gasket, but they told me at the time that the revised fix was sealant on both. They have proven themselves liars in the past, so maybe this is not true. Just my experience.
