Default 2000 A6 4.2 Purcahse opportunity

Hello everyone,

I have a opportunity to purchas a 2000 A6 4.2 quattro. Im new to audi and I was wondering what to look out for when looking at the car. It has 113k miles. It looks clean and they want 5500 for it. From pictures I can see that the driver information display is not working properly. Is this expensive and or difficult to replace? Any information would be very appreciated.

Thanks

I've owned an 01 A6 4.2 for a little over a year now and the only thing i can think of to recommend is to ask about the timing belt service, when was it done. The display going out it pretty common, mine has some pixels that are out. There is a company that fixes them but you have to send the gauge cluster in. I'd be guessing if I gave you a price but I know it's not too bad, <400 i believe... If you search the forum under the model category you'll find more info about what to look for as far as problems go...

I bought the car and I got lucky enough to have the owner manual with the dealer that did the service on the car since new. Long story short I contacted the dealer and their sending me the service records which apparently is quite extensive as the lady that owned this car took it in for everything even blown light bulbs. They didnt say if it had the timing belt service but heres praying lol. The service manager said it would be about 2700! Ouch!

The TB should have been done around 75K area....I'm surprised the dealer didn't push to have this done...especially since they appeared to have done lots of other general service work....this would have been a great profit 'sale'...service for them...!!!

I would be looking around for alternative...qualified shops or mechanics to do your service work if $2700 TB quote seems high...!!!

Most 4.2L V8's can be done for about $800 to $1500 w/parts & labor.

You can even get a great education about DIY, parts, labor, photos & procedures @ http://wwww.audipages.com There are other sources/forums as well to give you a 'feel' for the Audi...performance, service & maintenance...

Hope this is helpful...

Also beware that the transmissions go some where over 100,000. Got a one day warning putting the car into revers but that was it. Gone,no drive gear. $4,500 later it was up and running again.

Thanks for all the info. The car is running great so far knock on wood. except for a front end shudder that starts around 68mph and gets worse the faster I drive.
