I did measure the chains before replacing them and the one chain that ran bank 2 was slightly out but nothing major on any of them.

Why is it audi/Vw cant make an engine with timing chains last. VR6 and W8/W12 engines have the same stupid long, complex, over done chain setup with the cheapest plastic they could find to use as guides. 80k or less, rattles and problems. Almost wish they just stuck to belts.... How many miles does yours have on it?

Belts..?
Belts; So glad I have them.
I'm guessing here, so bare with me.
Can wear be reduced with a service schedule and the use of a top grade lubricant?
(this is a leading ? btw)
Nothing but synthetics and regular service will improve things if there is any possibility for improvement. Additives cannot help unless they are part of the equation.
WV/Audi Group have an agenda (my favorite word).
That agenda is selling [you] a new whatever.
The sooner the better for their prospective and bottom line to be met.
Using a top grade oil and not falling for extended drain schedules throws a kink in the agenda of all manufactures.
Use the best of whatever and service it often and I'd bet you a cup of coffee things will last and last much longer before you have to deal with their bottom line and your lighter
wallet.
Remember when an oil filter was unknown on an engine?
Amsoil, Neo, etc., etc., will kick the can further down the road when it comes to all major mechanical wear and tear along with regular (not extended) servicing.
Roll on, pc

What were the symptoms? All cylinders misfiring?
My 2005 4.2, while driving to church on Sunday, we felt what could be described as a 'bump', almost like a bump in the road, but the road was smooth. Immediately, I knew the engine was not right, and a few moments later, flashing engine light. Nursed it to church and home, running very rough. Hooked up the VCDS cable, and below is the scan for the engine.
I don't see/hear any vacuum leaks, and the 'bump' and the small rattle on startup that it has had (plus mileage), and I'm thinking that perhaps a tensioner just went and threw a bit of plastic into the chain, and now one bank is out of whack.
Does this sound similar to your experience? I'm not afraid to tackle the job, but of course, I'm hoping it is something 'simple'.

OP
Any sound clips of your exhaust? Looking at doing an exhaust setup here in the next few months. Strait pipes with high flow cats(damn emissions) and was wondering what it would sound like.

ProtoFly any luck with yours? I seem to have the exact same issue but with other bank.

Yes, piston to valve contact. I'll be replacing both heads with low-mileage ones that were offered to me. Otherwise, I'd be replacing 8 exhaust valves.
Thankfully, no valves were broken, and no real damage to the pistons - only a bit of carbon removed where the edge of the exhaust valves hit.
I have some pictures of the broken timing components in an album here, and will post some additional pictures of the engine soon.
Hopefully yours didn't throw timing off to the extent that mine was. Seems cylinders 5-8 are the most common, and I'd bet that yours is more of a result of the cam adjuster failing, rather than skipping a tooth. Do you have access to VCDS, that you can check the cam timing? In my case, since the exhaust cam skipped a tooth, VCDS did not show a difference side to side, since the sensors are located on the intake cams.
(EDIT) - My original scan shows cylinders 1-4 misfiring. I'm not certain that is the correct side, as it was my passenger (USA-right side) side tensioner that failed, which I think is cylinders 5-8.
