Default $150 for a f*#king alarm fob?

Well on my '96 A4 2.8Q the key fobs have ceased to function. Went to dealer and changed the batteries in both fobs but that didn't work. Though they didn't try reprogramming them, the fact that both fobs stopped working lead me to beleive that maybe the part getting the signal in the car may be busted. I've owned the car for a little over a year and the alarm has always felt kind of weak. New fobs are $140+ so I'm thinking, hell I can lock/unlock and arm/disarm the alarm with just the key. Are there any places I can get a cheaper fob? Should I try junk yards? The part that might actaully be broke is something like $200 before labor. Should I maybe just go with an aftermarket alarm from a local shop? Is the alarm controlling other things that I should worry about.

Go to the link below, $79 for new remote. You can reprogram it yourself.

KeylessRide

Default You are probably right...the unit in the car is probably broken.

Both keys going dead *at the same time* is highly unlikely.

Default yeah, what Raj said....

I read the initial post to quickly, probably something wrong with the receiver end.

Anyway, keylessride seems like a good place for anyone else looking for a replacement FOB.
