So I just finished replacing my engine mounts. The tech article was great help.
<br>
I own a 1997 Audi A4 2.8 and it currently has 134K miles. I will be writing a detailed letter with picture to Audi. Both of the engine mounts were defective and the bottom bolt completely sheared off the bottom plate so the engine mount was practically loose. I don't think this item is on recall but after you see the pictures you probably will agree that they should be. I encourage everyone to check the engine mount from the bottom and see if there is any purple residue or if the bottom plate of the engine mount looks cracked. I will post pictures when I get a chance.

you really think audi cares? On a 12 year old car **** is going to break/wear out.
Good job catching it and fixing the problem.

I would say you should have checked them 35k miles ago. I'm sure you could have seen some signs of wear.. before they got so sloppy in there it sheered anything off. 135k miles for motor mounts is pretty good. I would just keep up on maintenance an make sure anything showing wear is changed immediately.

Just to clear some things up, I am not asking Audi to do anything to my car directly. I am a Structural Engineer and I understand very well the consequences of time and stress and strain on metals. I looked at the metal of the engine mount, and by my calculations the metal fails by 24%. That means that the original mounts aren't even designed properly for the latteral load of the engine, i.e. when turning. I realy love Audi's and I would hate for them to be producing crap products and loose their performace credibility. I believe that if the metal is designed properly, the interior rubber bushing/seat will wear out from use and that should fail before the metal does. All I am trying to do is from my experience help people be aware of these and other items, i.e. control arms, that need frequent maintenance but are often ignored.
