Default 1.8 vs 2.8

Sounds like alot of you guys with the 1.8 have many more problems then the 2.8 A4s
Why is that so?

Default Re: 1.8 vs 2.8

It would be interesting to see a formal study of this, although I bet it would be impossible to get enough data to make it conclusive, at least without the cooperation of Audi.

To me, it makes sense that the 1.8T has more problems; it needs to work comparatively harder than the 2.8 to put out the same power, and the turbo in particular has some very high-speed/hot parts.

Then again, you can buy a lot of repairs for the $4300 price difference.

Default I think also the personality of the cars is different...

the 2.8 speaks more to the luxury buyer, the 1.8T has more sporty inclinations. I suspect the sporty buyers have a tendency to hammer their cars more.

Default I disagree. 1.8T has more upgrade options available for less money.

more upgrades for less money = more differences/options to discuss and contemplate.

Default 1.8 for manual tranny only and chipped driving/2.8 for tiptronic or no upgrades

I had to get a Tiptronic for my fiance.
She wanted to lease (ie no upgrades)

The choice was simple, 2.8 fully loaded.

We are happy with it. I would prefer to own a supercharged 2.8 QMS, but we all make sacrifices to keep everyone happy.

The 2.8 is capable of being drivin like a real touring car when adequately pushed. It can really go, and above 3000 rpms it is a monster!

The cops are the happiest. (I would have maxed out the supercharger on I-5 late one night!)

Default Audi/VW has studied (long)

[getting on soapbox]
I have to strongly differ with your "it makes sense to me" statement. Your thought is way too simplistic - really bordering on rumour mongering and mis-information.

Of course Audi/VW has studied the reliability of the 1.8t and they must be pleased with the results.

Here is why I am saying this:
If there were the heat/stress problems that you are implying may exist then VW would NOT start using the 1.8t engines worldwide on more and more VWs (Turbo Beetle, Pasat, Jetta etc.). The 1.8 has become a standard work-horse engine in the VW/Audi stable.

Audi wouldn't be raising the turbo boost/horse power to 180hp in the TT and European A4's if the engine was already stressed out. You know VW/Audi doesn't want a reputation of blown engines on ALL the car models w/ the 1.8t.

I think you may be confusing the Audi/VW turbo w/ a Ford/GM limited production run turbo or aftermarket limited production turbos that are put on cars by enthusiasts. Yes, some companies build crappy turbos but Audi (like Saab) has been doing turbos' for years and are well aware of heat/bearing limits.

I don't believe the engine itself is overstressed. Plenty of other 4 cylinder engines have higher rev limits (Acura VTEC) & hence run faster/hotter then the 1.8 engine and don't have problems.

The turbo is the high heat/stress part and there were some first model year problems with the year 97 models (oil line shielding - broken wastegates) but these have been resolved.

Hate to be so long winded but the bigger the engine the longer it will last just doesn't hold up.
