1.8 vs 2.8???
My friend is considering buying a 2.8, I have a 2001.5 1.8tq love it! and when I get the giac chip It'll boost it up to about 207 hp .
could you guys explain why the 1.8 is the better deal? he's planning on spending 36k on it. anyone can convince him that he should get the 1.8instead?

He should drive both...
I own cars with both the 1.8t and the 2.8 in them. My A4, with the 1.8t, feels very sporty, and is more economical, but does not have as much power out of the box. My Passat 4mo, with a 2.8, is very smooth and powerful feeling, but doesn't have the sporty sound and pull of the 1.8t, even though it is no slower. If he wants a reliable, butch engine, the 2.8 is a fine choice. If he wants to tune his car and wind up with a kraut rocket that's a blast to drive, but probably won't be covered under his factory warranties, and has a slightly higher chance of part failure, the 1.8t is a great engine that is pretty much bulletproof. Personally, I like the 1.8t much better and plan on tuning the heck out of it, but I know plenty of people who just don't like the feel of it.

Hrm.. If you say so.. I know the 2001 is supposed to be 170 stock instead of 150 but...
I didn't think a chip was able to push a 2001 car much more than a 2000.
I've also heard that the 2001 engine is actually 180hp but they call it 170 because they don't want it to be so close to the 2.8?
