1.8T Cam chain tensioner failures

Does anyone have any idea why the 2001 A4's are prone to having the tensioners fail and not other year 1.8T's? What changed? My wifes 2001 A4 has the problem at 67K miles (but the noise has been there for some time, just getting really bad now) while my 99 A4 with a 1.8T seem to be fine (at least in regards to the cam chain tensioner).
Has Audi owed up to any responsibility for these failures?

So, is this tensioner controlled electrically or mechanically? I saw some other entry somewhere that indicated it was solenoid controlled. Is it a problem with the solenoids or just wearing of the tensioner?
