Default 1.8T hesitation?

I've noticed a trait of my 99.5 1.8TQMS (about a week old) that I'm curious about. Sometimes when I accelerate from a stop at light throttle, there will be some very subtle hesitation. Not a miss or a jerk, but kind of say, a ripple in the power. Could this be I just have to give it more gas, as it doesn't seem to happen if I'm making a spirited start. I guess it could also be the power distributing itself through the drivetrain to all the wheels. What I really want to find out is if this is a normal characteristic of a 1.8TQ.

Default Re: 1.8T hesitation?

It could be the knock sensor cutting in. Try a third gear full acceleration, and see if it sort of surges or hesistates. That is the sensor cutting back to avoid knock.

Default From all the posts in the archives, this seems to be normal (more)

My 99.5 1.8TQMS has the same subtle "uneven" acceleration, particularly when its warm and the AC is on. Seems like they might try to do some tuning to fix this. Although hopefully a nice stage I chip will solve the problem...
CB

Default I had the same problem with my 99.5. . .

the solution . . .simple. . .give it more gas. I was coming from a 91 Acura Integra which had a really low idle (about 450 RPM). I could get that thing going at about 1200 RPM.
Now my A4 has a slightly higher idle speed (around 750 RPM). I have to give it more gas to get it away cleanly. For casual accelerations, I think it's about 1500-1700 RPM. It took me a few days to get used to it.
Another thing that surprised me was the engine hesitation when the AC was on. Now, I have a APR chip and there's almost none what so ever.
My $2,000,000 worth
Tech_KO
Silver 99.5 1.8T, QSM, 2000 miles

Default As I've said before, methinks the "lagless" turbo lags a bit.

Default My experience & thoughts are similar. (more)

As one of the previous posts says, it seems more noticeable with the A/C on. I curious as to whether this hesitation hurts the clutch, but maybe not since it's fully released at the time.
It's not that I can't live with it, but it does make me think more seriously about a chip.
John
99.5 1.8tqms

Default Me too...99.5 1.8T hesitation at idle...

I also enjoy some hesitation at start specially with the A/C on. Also noticed that when the engine is at idle (750 rpm) it is not steady. It constantly bounces around 50 rpm or less. Is this normal or is just that the RPM measuring device is too sensitive? What is it?
99.5 1.8TMS

Default Shotgun answers...

I misread your post as to how fast you were accelerating. A couple of observations:
A/C is a killer, turn it off for a sec. or give lots of gas. (happens in every car I have ever driven)
3 people in the car, give it more gas
There is little torque at light throttle, since the turbo is not on boost (can't have lag unless it pauses before it spools up, and you say only with light throttle). The heavy flywheel and deliberately low idle rpm (emissions) are also contributing factors.

Default Some more thoughts on this....

I paid a little more attention to this phenomena on my drive home. It seems clear that there is a point as you let out the clutch that the engine really bogs down and does not really respond to even heavy throttle input. The wierd thing is that if you blip the throttle or just do a revvy start just prior to coming off the throttle the problem does not occur. The funny thing is that Audi makes a big deal about the 1.8T having such a low torque peak but I really don't find that the car drives in such a manner - it shouldn't get bogged down by the driveline as the clutch is being let out. Maybe the drivetrain for the quattro just has a lot of inertia. Love to hear some commentary from someone with some real knowledge in this area.
JohnO
99.5 1.8Tqms
