1.8T vs 2.8 engine mount differences?
I've had that "thunk" under the hood for a couple years now, glad to see that everyone seems to know what it is now, they sure didn't the first three times I tried to get this fixed
Sooo, getting new engine mounts ... I read here that the 2.8 mounts are different than the 1.8T mounts. I have a 2.8 -- is there some obvious way to tell that the right mounts are being installed? Different number of mounts? Exterior color? Part number to be checked on paperwork?

awesome, thanks; followup question:
Sorry for the noob mount question, but the description specifies that only 2 mounts are required ... is the snub mount the 3rd point or is something else (not a mount) holding the engine in place (i.e. the transmission interface).
Gawd, I'm getting excited about how this will finally tighten up my car, it's been like this for 2+ farking years. Now if I could just get the rearview mirror fixed, the cruise control slider switch fixed, the graphics display fixed ...

there are 2 motor mounts bolted: 1 each side viewable from engine bay, a front mount that sits in a basket "aka snub mount" this a rubber/poly material. Viewable from under car just behind radiator. There are also 2 mounts for the tranyy one on each side. Only viewable from under the car.
The snub mount doesn't really wear out since its just rubber. Ocassionaly they may split but not very frequent. Most people upgrade their snub to a firmer poly material to help reduce the bucking movement of the engine under load. A bad motor mount will either be sheared or leaking a purplish fluid since its dampener as well. The tranny mounts are solid rubber and can split causing movement of the drivetrain as well. If you search the forum you'll find some pictures of motor & tranny mount failures.

followup: wasn't mounts, was control arms
Probably the only way anyone will ever see this is by searching for "engine mount", but here's a followup:
I took my car to Autobahn Performance (Doraville, GA, metro Atlanta) where Paul Cassara & Co worked on it. They quickly determined that the motor mounts were in fact fine. It was the upper control arms that were clearly shot. They replaced all four uppers and the car is noticably tighter now. I know about the JE campaign on the lowers -- I need to have a long serious conversation with my dealer about that, because the lowers are almost certainly shot as well, despite dealer inspection to the contrary earlier this year.
Anyway, my point is that if you think you might have motor mount problems, it might actually be control arms. Cost me $864 to replace the four upper control arms.
