1.8t Vs 2.8 V6

My dad has a 2001 1.8T and I have a 1999 30v 2.8. Both are bone stock Tiptronics.
My 2.8 is definately faster off the line. Once moving, the major difference is I have to really wind out the 1.8T to get it to move like the 30v.
The 2.8 is deceptively faster than the 1.8T. It's quiter and smoother in it's acceleration so you don't think you're going that fast.
The 1.8T is louder and "yanks" harder b/c of the Turbo kicking in thus making you feel like you're moving faster when in fact it's really not. It's also more "tossable" than my heavier 2.8.
That said, you're looking for a chipped 1.8T which I'm SURE will be faster than a chipped 2.8. Chipped 2.8's only yeild 8-10 more horse power I believe.
Chipped 1.8T's can get much more HP than that and are lighter so ultimately they'll be faster.
Good luck!

Turbos are all about torque, contrary to popular belief. Ever notice how much more torque than power you usually get out of a turbo engine? The big advangage the 2.8 has is there is NO lag (the 1.8t has a little, even in stock form) off idle..
Now, I have driven both too, granted I have only driven a 1.8t in my mom's GTI, which really scoots, but gets old fast. In stock form I actually prefer the 2.8, because it doesn't run out of steam as the revs come up, it keeps getting better till you hit the rev limiter.

The 1.8T has 166 ft. lbs. @ 1950-5000 RPM and 170HP @ 5900 RPM
The 2.8 has 207 ft. lbs. @ 3200 RPM and 190HP @ 6000 RPM.
Since the 1.8T holds peak tourque throughout the power band it would not "lose steam". The 2.8 actually loses steam as the revs rise.
Also, both cars HP peaks at almost the exact same time but since the 2.8 is putting out more power at that point, you're going faster.
I still prefer my 2.8 over the 1.8T. I didn't want to mod my car so it was the best choice.

umm im having trouble believing (unless this is an abosolutely proven fact) that a chipped + exhaust +intake 1.8 will beat a 2.8 with the same setup...
ok here i go;
1.8t = 150 hp for the year he talkin about
chip, 40 more, exhast and intake, 15 more.
<205 hp>
2.8 - 193 hp stock
chip, 15 hp. exhaust and intake, 15 hp
225 hp and more power down low due to beefier torque.
granted if you really want to build a hot rod and mod all day....get a 1.8. you might like the sound of the turbo, blow off, feel of the boost kicking in etc. i prefer my 2.8. much smoother engine and acceleration. And it IS considerably faster than a 1.8t in stock form. I also dont like the sound of an exhaust on a 1.8t...4 cylinder rice sound. these are all my opinions...you need to drive both to really find out what you want.
anyone care to argue?

I always seem to do.. Anyway, we don't disagree.. The point I was trying to make was that the bulk of the 1.8t's thrust is at lower rmps, and it becomes short of breath once it passes the torque peak, whereas the 2.8 just keeps getting better, at least mine does. Keep it over 4k and it's happier than a pig in.. well you know.. ;-)

chip for 150hp 1.8t's net 50hp. + 10-15 for exhaust (intake doesn't really help 1.8t). So ~212hp.
chip for 30v nets ~8hp + 15hp for intake and exhaust. So ~212hp.
But the 1.8t is lighter and has shorter gearing so it will pull harder until very high speeds.
