Default I want to eliminate turbo lag, overall driving experience is more important to me than all out speed

I wanted to try a turbo, now I can say that I've been there and done that. I prefer my old BMW I-6 since you have the torque when your letting out the clutch, not a low compression 4-cylinder.

Now if you wanted to spend $$$s adding big turbos to older cars, feel free to; I just find it's not for me (Audi's have enough maintenance already).

Maybe he enjoys low end torque and reliability.

Default 98.5 2.8 5-speed

If possible find one with leather, sport suspension, and sport seats

I like the 98.5 much better than the 99.5 up

96 is a 12v... Try a modded 30v.

85k miles and great reliability. More torque at 3000 rpm than a 2.8

Default But it's surprising how much of your time is spent < 3,000 rpm...

and with the 1.8T < 3,000 rpm unfortunately doesn't include highway driving...
