If it was a loose heat shield, I'd expect the noise all the time. Hmmm. Any ideas? Thanks!

Is it a slightly high-pitched whirring?
This is what I had, and it turned out to be the A/C when the car was first turned on.. Normal, apparently. Turn off the A/C, no probs. (Assuming this is your problem.)

Not a whirring; more of a low-pitched buzzing/rattling.
Hadn't thought to see if the A/C made a difference. My wife normally starts the car with the A/C on, so... I'll have to check. You can't hear it from inside with the windows up. But I can sure hear it when she drives away! Once the sound goes away, it stays away until the engine is cold-started again.
Thanks for the thought!

Hard to describe sounds in words, but I had a .......
loud irregular clunk clunk clunk noise on cold starts that would go away after the car warmed up. It would only come back after the car was stopped for at least 6 hours and totally cool again. The dealership changed the water pump, serpentine belt, and other stuff and it was still making the noise. They recently changed the belt tensioner and the noise has been gone for a while now.
