10,000 mile service questions

Just got back from my 10,000 mile service. I made the switch to Mobile 1 for this service (brought my own) and the service tech suggested I drain and refill with new oil after 500 miles. This is because I made the switch to synthetic. Anyone heard of this?
Also the tech called me back to make me aware my rear differential fluid was "milky white" and had to be changed. I asked what the problem was and he said water is probably getting in somehow and to have them check again at next service. Water in rear differential doesn't sound real good to me. What long term affects could this bring?
I live in the mountains of Colorado and I take my Audi to a small (I mean small!) dealership. I did not buy the car here, it is just the closest for me. Do these guys know what they are talking about? Shouldn't they have checked for the differential problem right away and not say "lets keep and eye on it for next service"?
Any thoughts on the above appreciated.

I don't think you need the 500mi oil change. I see no reason to do that.
Do change the diff lube (should be free!). Then do check it again at each service. If it gets water in it again they should find out why and fix the leak. Perhaps something happened once that got water into it. Hopefully it's not a recuring problem.
I'm impressed they actually checked it.
