Default 152 vs 153 toothed timing belt on 1.8t AEB motor

Hello all,

I just read through the entire search results for "timing belt" and could not find my answer.

I just replaced my timing belt with the "Ultimate Kit" from ECS Tuning. I did not know the belts were different until I could not get the crank and cam sprockets to line up correctly. Then I matched the old and new timing belts only to find the new one has ONE more tooth.

The question here, which doesn't seem to be addressed on forum is this, the extra tooth, does it go on the left or right side of the cam sprocket?

Any help, or more valuable, past experience would be appreciated.

There should not be any "extra tooth" in the timing belt. You might have got a t-belt for one of the other motors(ie TT or such). Turn the motor over 2 cycles and if the marks do not line up, then there is a problem (just to make sure). The t-belt should be a no-brainer of a job. I have dealt with ECS and they have been 1st rate. You may want to give them a call and give them the part # of the belt to check. Good luck.

Default though ecs might be 1st rate...

I've heard a lot about them not sending the right parts a lot of times... so I'd put $$ on them sending you the wrong part.

Default Do you realize...

how many packages leave here without mistakes. Just because you may hear of a few mistakes does not mean much. We pride ourselves in working a 1% error margin, meaning 99 out of 100 packages are corrected packed & the customer is satisfied. The 1% margin is very, very acceptable in this business

Default The 153 tooth belt replaced the 152 tooth belt with...

the upgrades tensioner assembly. The 152 tooth belt is only to be used with the old & troublesome tensioner assembly. This sounds like a installation problem?

Default wasn't trying to ruffle feathers...

so I appologize. I have just talked to a lot of people that have had problems, that's all.

And you are correct, you only hear of the bad stories not the good ones.

Default I've ordered a lot from ECS, good experiences

I think in 5 orders I have had two problems, one was my fault and the other was a packing issue. ECS resolved it immediately and flexibly and they are the first place to go when I need something. Every copmany makes mistakes and the 1% that Tom mentions but not all companies resolve things so quickly, ECS is tops in my book.

Sure, its always frustrating when you get your order on a Friday to do a Saturday mod and a piece is missing but thems the dice! Thats why you pay the dealer a lot more for parts, you get to walk out with them.

Well, thats my perception anyhow I'm an ECS fan.
