the wait is killing me at the moment for the 18"s.
It's amazing the difference in handling from my former 17" AVUS and the stock 15"s with Artic Alpin's on them.

also wheels with chrome/polished lip is sensitive to potholes - 17s dont have many low-profile tires available thats why they seem more 'protected'

...but they remain perfect. I think the vulnerable parts of most wheels - the rim are as thin as they can make them. One piece forged rims arent a lot thinner than cast as far as I can tell but they appear to be much more resistant to impact distortion.
You are right, forged center pieces in a 2-3 piece wheel dont guarantee a forged rim.

One day I may decide to upgrade my brakes...and if I do, I'll have to start looking at 18's to get enough clearance to make me comfortable. I'm just gathering data points.
