I ordered my silver 00 A41.8T in early December from Audi of North Atlanta...should get delivery in a few weeks!!! CAN'T WAIT!!! I have seen some posts that the 00s have been bumped up to 180HP. Does anyone know if this is true and if it is true why would Audi do this without public announcement??? This is my first Audi so I am not very familiar with Audi's ways??? Responses would be greatly appreciated!!!

The drive by wire ecus are allowing a bit more boost than before, but still under .8 bar, which
is what even the conservative chips will get you. Also as a seperate consequence of the drive by
wire throttle, you reach full boost at little over half pedal travel, giving you the "feel" of more
power off the line but a little deader in freeway passing.

The tuner at Eurotech (Brian Ettl) told me that drive by wire cars (i.e., '00 A4 1.8T) will have less HP's when chipped that the previous models. Does anyone know why that may be the case?

With drive by wire your gas pedal is just like a video game controler, it only sends an electronic
signal to an actuator on the throttle body that opens and closes the plenum. There is no direct
linear connection as with a throttle cable. So as far as tuning goes I had heard that it was
possible to squeeze an ADDITIONAL 3-5 HP out of a 1bar drive by wire chip vs. cable throttle.
I think this has already been demonstrated with TT tuning.

2000 models
A4 runs 8-9 pounds
Audi TT runs 9-12 pounds
Beetle runs 9-12 pounds
S4 runs 9 pounds
Golf 4 1.8t runs 9 pounds
Passat 8-9 pounds
The older A4/Passat ran 6 pounds
Most of the A4/Passat 97-99.5 running the 6 pounds produced about 126@ the front wheels on the FWD which was about 150hp

The reasons TT's, and even newer A4's run more boost, and feel quicker than they are, is due to changes in the exhaust. Newer A4's have a 60mm exhaust compared to 55mm. This allows a little more boost to come through safely and allows for better response at lower rpms. Audi mapped the ECU for this. The TT has more HP when chipped because alltogether, it has a less restrictive manifold and downpipe compared to the A4/Passat set-ups.
