Default 1996 OBD connector

The 1996 Audi OBD connector is in fact between the driver and passener seat and accessable from the back seat. Neither Autozone or Advance Auto have a connection to fits the connector! It looks like the same shape fitting and number of pins however due to the design of the female connector on the Audi, the male connector on the hand held reader does not fit into the socket! Has anyone had experience with just pulling out the connector out ot the socket holder between the seats?

Take out the ashtray where the obd connector resides, there will be 2 nuts holding the center console down, either 10 or 12mm, i don't remember. Unscrew them, pull up the console, and pull out the connector.

Well somebody must have gotten a plug in there over the last 14 years! Anyway, the '96 had a problem here that requires trimming the plastic with a hobby knife around the connector. It's a standard OBDII connector.

I may have to do this. The ham-fisted inspecter kept trying the jam the probe in until a small piece if the connector cracked off. He then said my connector was damaged and had to be repaired.

Take a Dremel and grind out the extra plastic for more clearance, Audi was given a pass for one year to locate the plug in the ashtray.
