Default 1998 A4 Avant for my daughter

Looking at a 1998 A4 Avant 2.8 for my 17 yr old. It's an automatic with 128,000 miles. What should I look for? Cosmetically the car looks fantastic. I own an 2005 A4 Avant 2.0T with every APR upgrade and love it! ABS light is on the owner said it's a sensor and will have it replaced.
Thank you

Default Lucky girl, I'd have killed for that car at 17!

The ABS may/may not be a sensor malfunction. The only way to know for sure is to get a VAG-COM and check yourself. Other than that, the mileage is decent for the year, and its a V6 so no turbo to worry about.

Check out our FAQ for more info on B5A4s than you can imagine:

B5 FAQ

Default Are you looking to adopt? :o)

Along with all of the stuff that rally vermont mentioned check to make sure that the timing belt services have been done, check to see if they have done all of the proper fulid flushes in the car, also see if there is a graoning noise from the rear, if so that is going to be a rear wheel bearing issue. It sounds like a pretty nice car from what you have described to us.

Default There is an FAQ around here somewhere, with info for new buyers.

Start with that.

Regarding that ABS light, it might be the ABS module itself, which is more pricey than the sensor. $1000 part at the dealership. Some folks here have sent it out to a shop to have it rebuilt for 1/4 of the price. I wouldn't count on that, I would make sure the seller addresses that light before handing over money.

A used german car can have plenty of issues. I'd suggest taking it to a mechanic, and cross referencing the things he checked with the items you've found in the FAQ, just to make sure he didn't miss anything.

FAQ

Default Heh...a 17 year old's point of view in 2006...

It's a nearly 10 year old station wagon with over 100K miles on it!

I remember when I turned 16, and my father let me borrow the "good" car. It was about the size of an A4 Avant, and not something I was particularly fond of (course it was better than my bike, but still...).

2nd, except '97 for me. Our car still have features and abilities that most newer cars still lack.

Default I have a 98 - The main issues would be:

1. Records for Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioner.
2. Display in dash.
3. tie rods.

But I got my daughter a stick (95 Audi 90). She hated me at first - but now loves that she can drive a stick and most of her friends can't

Default Haha, awesome. I think I should make my kids (if/when I have them) learn how to drive a manual

tranny car first before they can drive anything else.

My first car was a 5spd, and I still miss that car years later.
