1998 A4 Shut off While driving on the highway!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!
I had battery problems about a week ago. Battery was recharged then the car driven for another week.
My intentions were to buy a new baterry, but clearly didn't make my timeline. Now, the car crapped out on the highway, didn't really hear any noise...What could it be. I can hear it cranking (after changing the battery), but the started doesn't seem to be pulling the same (I think). Bottomline is, I really have no clue what it could be and I really need your guys help!!!!! Is it possible that the timing belt slipped?? I have tried starting the car and the crank I hear, but the timing belt doesn't seem to be moving??? What am i looking at hear...Starter, alternator, fuel pump, timing belt???
Please help, and quick!!! Audi mechanic friend seems to think its the timin belt. I think it is kind of rare that I had battery trouble a week ago and now my timing belt decided to slip??? Could I have killed the alternator. Electronics still work, just wont frieken start!!!!!
HELP!!! Thanks!!!

I'd put my money on catastrauphic engine failure... "shut off on highway" is symptomatic.
Pull the upper timing belt cover at the front of the cylinder head... if the belt does not turn when you attempt to start the car then odds are you are in for a very expensive repair bill. If the car just makes that cute click click click click click noise like you've got a dead battery, you've just got a dead battery again and the cause could be something other than the belt drive components. IMO, The battery failure is irrelevant to the belt drive failure if that is what has occured.
Now the fun question is why did the engine die... lack of maintenance. Was it... poor oil change routine or was it soembody forgot to have their belt drive components changed at a safe interval?
Time will tell.

Re: 185000
Oil is always Synthetic and changed regularly. The only thing I can confess to is 182000 km on the belt. I was told to change it some 40000 km ago. Now your making me sweat...any good news going to come out of this...any other ideas???

Oh no, you're fvcked. You should've had the belt changd 85,000 km ago!
Congrats, you need a new engine or a very expensive rebuild.
That was very stupid of you if you had been told to change it.

Re: The belt did not tear or anything of the sort...
Could a slip in a belt do all that?
How do I know for sure? Anything I can look at that will give me a definitive answer. I have already looked at the timing belt not moving...is that my answer?
