I did not do the head work though, I was getting sick of it not running and it probably would have taken me a bit longer than a machine shop. So i took the head to the machine shop to replace the valves and guides.
All in all doin git myself, replacing other misc. parts, i kept it under $1800.
BTW, the pistons were fine. But that is not the case for everybody.

Accessories.
But chances are your timing belt is gone, especially with that many miles. As Nate said you were about 85,000 KILOMETERS over when it SHOULD have been changed. It will be a very expensive lesson.
A timing belt keeps the bottom end of the motor on sync with the top end, when it breaks the two are not coordinated, and in an interference motor like the 1.8t or 2.8 you smash your valves because they don't open and close in sync with the bottom end.
Sorry that this happened to you, but you CANNOT delay doing the timing belt every 60k miles.

I hope that you guys are wrong, but in all likely hood I am fuc$%d. I have an Audi mechanic friend who will be looking at it tomorrow, two fingers crossed and hoping for the best. If the valves are screwed, does that inherently mean that the pistons are bent?

you're fvcked
now you have to work on the abortion. You have two options
1) Raise the bastard child (replace the head) which costs you alot of money, and your life (car) may never be the same again
2) Get the vacuum cleaner and start sucking (just sell it off as is or part it out). Obviously abortions aren't cheap but if you do all the work yourself you might be able to get away with keeping the car.

You should be close to your second one by now. If you're cranking the car and the belt is not moving, regardless if it has tension then you are screwed.
