Default 1998 Audi Quattro 1.8T 5Spd continued....

My first post was about this silver 1.8T that I
had found at a local dealership that I have done
business with before. I said the car had 67K miles
I was incorrect it's 69K and it's a loaded 5spd
with moonroof and the works. I haven't test driven
the car yet because I work steady midnight shift
and the car was out getting serviced and prepped
for the lot. They called today while I was asleep
and my dad went and checked it out and took it for
a test drive.

My dad told me that he saw a few nicks on the
front and rear bumpers but the side of the car
looked clean and the interior was spotless. He
said he thought the car was slow compared to my
V6 Stratus (which stock vs. stock I am sure it is
considering the Stratus is 178HP) he also said the
clutch is extremely touchy but the shifter was
smooth as butter (I said not for long..).

The car has HVAC, Moonroof, Bose Premium (Laughs)
with CD Changer etc..

The dealership will sell me the car for $9000.00
(Plus Tax, Title etc..) or $9400.00 with an extra
warranty (not sure of the length and milage). And
from what everyone on these forums and my own
research shows this is one hell of a deal?

But that's also what scares me.. WHY is it so
cheap when everyone else is asking 11-12K for the
same car. I will run a CarFax on it to make sure
this thing is clean!

Tomorrow morning I am going to TD it and check it
out with a fine tooth comb.. He also said he can
probably get me financing at 4% if my credit is
good enough (which it is) or the current rate is
6% which still isn't too bad..

I am not sure if it's a 98 or 98.5 I will check
that out tomorrow.

Default Has the timing belt been done...

...if a dealer does it there's $1200 right there. They wil tell you not to do the belt until 90K , but at 69K and 5 years + old I wouldn't drive any pre 99 1.8T anywhere without fixing the belt and tensioner first.

Check the brakes also a set of brakes can run $300-400 per axle.

If you can do any of this stuff yourself this could be a good deal.

Default brakes just done.. Timing belt.. not done..

The reason it was in the mechanics for three days
is they were doing a brake job, oil change and'
greasing everything so he says.

He says the timing belt doesn't have to be changed
till 100K and "technically" that may be the case.
But I am not going to chance it.. I understand it
costs about $110.00 or so for the parts? I can do
it myself.

The price sure seems right..

Default the clutch is hydralic...

the engagement is very high compaired to a normal machanical linkage. so this may not be a problem. do the timing belt!

Default Yep same as in my C5 Vette

But he said it felt more touchy than the one in
the Vette..

I think that will be a good thing! The pedal in
the Vette isn't very touchy at all.. I think I can
work with it

Default price is about right, dont worry about it. I hope it's a 98.5

98.5 with trip computer

that's low mileage for that year. I'd get it

Default more like $250 for parts..for belt tensioner pump roller etc....

if you can do it yourself..it's a great deal...
make sure you check the cat downpipe too...it tends to break off...check the control arms as well..they'll run you $600 in parts alone...

Default Timing belt = $$$

If you can do it yourself, you're looking at about $250-300 in parts (ECS Tuning ultimate TB kit). For someone who was going to waddle in to a dealer and get it done, you'd spend anywhere from $800-1200. So that accounts for some of the "discount." 8-)

Cheers,

Watch out for the clutch which is around $2000 Canadian or $2600 through Audi Dealer.
