1998 Automatic transmission hard shifting
Ok guys, I've check around the forum but found nothing helpfull so far for my problem.
I have a 1998 A4 with a 5 speed automatic. It shifts hard between 1,2,3rd gear and sometimes 4th. When the car is cold, it will shift but takes a bit longer to get out of first gear. As the car gets warmer it shifts a little better but not at all smoothly. I notice if I accelerate a bit, it seems to shift a bit smoother. If I am being very gentel with the gas pedal, it shifts harder. Took it to Audi to read the computer...no error messages.
Suggestions?
I am a newish Audi owner, am just learning all the jargen...so be gentel.

You don't say how many miles on the car, but if more than 75k the trans is probably due for a service. Most people buy the Audi spec of "never" for tranny service interval.
Start with new fluid and filter. Change the fluid. No flushing!

A4 Tranny
Since you're a daily audi driver, I was wondering if you know the location of the solenoid in the tranny?
also, my gear 1 to gear 2 isn't connecting well. once it hits gear 3, it drives fine. would you suggest just replacing the solenoid or the whole tranny?
thanks

There isn't "the solenoid", there are a whole row of them. 4Driver4's advice to the OP still applies to you- change the fluid and filter, go from there.

Transmission fluid/filter new
I just bought the car about 3 months ago, the engine transmission were transplanted (before I bought it). The fluid/filter are supposed to be new. What's next?

How about verifying the fluid level and condition, checking the codes yourself (never trust diagnostic work done by others) doing some output tests?
This sounds like a classic low fluid problem.

how can I check the codes myself, I don't have the diagnostic computer from audi. I'll look into checking the fluid again, I saw that as one of the problem fixes for this type of problem in the forums but kind of counted it out since it was supposedly just done.

Lots of people do it wrong because the procedure is unfamiliar. Read up on how to check fluid level, and have the proper equipment and ATF ready so you can add fluid if low.

Was this ever resolved? I'm having same problem with my 99 five speed auto. Changed the oil and filter and worse now. Taking it back to dealer to check fluid levels and mountings because they say there are no codes when running diagnostic.
