Default i agree that the audi calibration of its MAFs could be conservative...

but by changing the x-section at the MAF element you are changing the calibration of the MAF.

The MAF doesnt compensate for the new found air, and neither does the ECU.

The ECU will compensate when it realizes its getting more air than it thinks it is.

The MAF is calibrated such that a certain cooling rate dicates how much air is flowing. This is true provided the x-section is constant.
changing the X-section, by definition, requires an ECU recode. In your case, this may be with-in the noise of the audi engineer's tolerance in the design of the MAF. As you pump more air, this tolerance zone disappears, and the error between what the ECU thinks its getting and what it is get much larger.

With that said, I think adding the velocity stack and removing the screen is a good tweak that retains the MAF's calibration and reduces drag.

It would be interesting to see some vag-logs of 30valve engines before and after to see how the ECU responds.
