Is the 2.8 30v worth chipping? If so, what can I expect to pay and what chip to buy?

the shift points presumeably to stay out of the 30V dead zone (1500-2500 RPM) but I've never been able to find anyone who has it or would comment on it. I think it is a GIAC chip.

Yes, I only paid $350 for the GIAC chip. Granted its only ~10HP but its one of the few performance upgrades you can do to a 30v. And the car seems to have a little better throttle response. Oh, no more speed limiter either.

(long)Like others I have heard that the available chips offer minimal upgrades in HP and torque. I read a fellow A4 comment on MTM. That would be interesting. I looked at the PES site perticularly the new bolt on supercharger. That seems the way to go but is big $$$$

Be carefull, alot of these vendors advertise gains on 2.8 chips - not much there, if you are using 92 octane fuel. The knock sensor is already on the limit from the factory, so there is not much a chip can do with that fuel. I put a chip on my GTI - VR6 - engine a little smoother, idle is smoothed out, but no real power gain. It was only $100 though. SO if it is cheap maybe ok.

one of the things that 30V chips do is increase the partial throttle advance (in addition to increasing WOT timing).
This tends to make the car 'feel' faster b/c it is more responsive. You WILL notice a difference with a chip. This is usually a good thing...unfortunately, the TAP chip I had in my 98.5 30V advanced it a bit too much and made my car ping under part-throttle (even in 45F weather with an entire bottle of 104+ octane booster in there).
It's for sale: Spare ECU with TAP chip for a 98.5 30V Frontrak with Tiptronic...BO over $400.
