The 2.8 is my first german car and I bought used. Therefore I cant compare the car to a new 2.8. From the outside, the engine sounds much different than my suburu and hondas that I am accustumed to. From the outside, I can hear the fan spinning, and one other noise that I cant describe well. Does the engine sound different on a cold morning? I think what I hear is the belt but I am not sure.

You shouldn't hear much. The 2.8 is very quiet.
If you have a 98+ then you have the 30v V6.
I have the 12v V6 in my 97' and all you can hear are the belts running. On cold morning starts, the belts are a little louder but subside after the engine warms up. Is your noise loud, or do you have to be near the engine outside the car to hear it? Can you hear it while in the vehicle?

I can only hear the insides of the engine standing outside in front of the car. Inside, I dont hear a thing. I guess im not used to this car yet.

another question,
when i accelerate fast, i can hear i whistling noise. is that normal. sounds pretty cool.

Were the others V6 configurations? Even if they were, I would expect them to sound different.

It probably is the lifters as stated by A4_Novice.
Doen't know what the whistling is? Is it wind noise or does it correlate with acceleration?
Does it sound like yankee doodle dandee, if so, pretty cool.
