Default 2.8 SOHC Timing belt alignment- Urgent... HELP...

I've looked through the tech section, and I'm a bit confused. Here's some background:

I got to the timing belt, but neglected to rotate the block to TDC before pulling timing belt. BUT, there are marks on the belt and camshaft pulleys for alignment, AND I made a mark for aligning the pulleys to the covers. I couldn't get the spark plugs loose, so I figured I would do that service later. Of course, when I released the tensioner, the camshafts sprung (compression since spark plugs still in) and moved. (Wasn't ready for that.)

I have now replaced the old timing belt, since it has the marks, but I want to make absolutely sure that I align the camshaft and crankshaft prior to running. The marks were aligned on the camshafts, but I can't tell if the crankshaft moved too. When I rotate the crankshaft so that the big holes on the camshafts point inward, the crankshaft timing mark is pointed straight up, not at 1:00 where the mark on the cover is.

Please help! Any recommendations please send. I have photos, too, that I can email.

Chris

That's not why the Cam Shafts Spun, its due to the valve springs being under tension.

When I did my 12v I left the plugs in and after aligning to TDC I was able to remove the belt without the Cams moving.

Best bet is to scrap the alignment so far and start again from scratch - or leave it where it is rotate the engine through 2 revolutions by hand and ensure that the Timing Marks line up.

Visually the the large holes in the cam shaft sprocket should must face each other

There is a timing mark on the Damper pulley it should align with a mark on the block at around 1 O'clock.

You probably have learned this the hard way - but never remove any timing gear until the engine is at TDC.

Default count the number of teeth on the old belt between your alignment marks

spin the cam (counter the direction they spunwhen you pulled out the tensioner) so that the marks line up, and you should be all set.

make sure the number of teeth you count on the old belt is the number of teeth you count when you put the new belt on.

Default Thanks- that's pretty much what I did...

I counted teeth, and made marks on the belts where they were on the old one. Luckily I had made the marks on the covers, so I knew which way they spun (camshafts). I was able to line them up with the teeth on the belt, as before, but it was off in relation to the crankshaft.

So I started over and realigned the crankshaft with the mark, and then spun the cams into place. "magically" the marks on the belt also lined up. Money. The right wanted to stay in the correct position, but the left was more touchy. It would stay, but not if I pulled on the belt at all. Definitely a finesse operation. I think I'm all set, since they are all matched up. Now to get the radiator support and bumper on before work tomorrow...

Thanks!
Chris

Default Did you rotate the crankshaft two full rotations??

Make sure to do that (I suggest you take the plugs out so you can easily spot interference since there will be no compression)..

at least then you can do a dry run without grenading your motor.

Default Yep- turned it a bunch. Spark plugs are frozen (another problem)...

...so I did it w/ them in. I drove it today - runs well, but slower than before. Have a feeling my mechanic (last one to do the timing) advanced it. Not sure -will ask.

In any case - it's running pretty well. Have an oil leak to investigate (new as of last week -bummer) and the plugs to figure out.

Thanks for the input-
Chris
