2.8L 30V Head Job Done (Dont use aft mkt tensioner!!)
Thought I would share some pics of the heads & belt job I just did on an recent A4 30V I bought. Someone made it to 125K and the teeth ripped off the belt but the belt did not break. I'm very suprised it only bent 2 valves. So 50 hours labor later I finished with no issues but a throttle adapt needed for the TPS.
On another note I bought a aftermarket hydraulic tensioner form FCP Groton & it failed after 350 miles of use. Luckily no valves were damaged & the car actually ran with the belt slaping the T-Belt cover. I learned the hard way & repeat DO NOT buy after market on this item. Waiting for FCP's response & am wondering if they are going to step up swap for an OEM unit.
Want to thank everyone who contributed to the many very helpfull 2.8 head & T-belt write ups on Audi World!!!

http://s408.photobucket.com/albums/pp162/JP1976/</a

Tensioner or idler?
I've used aftermarket several times with no issues. Depends on source and quality. There was a bad batch of idlers floating around, but I've never heard of a tensioner failing on a 30v.
Regardless, sounds like you were unlucky...and lucky.

Re: Tensioner or idler?
Was the tensioner. Yea I have used aftermarket before but never seen this. It actually would intermintantly fail. Got the piston to pop back out to get home. I cant remember the name on the box but the tensioner body was totally void of any co stamping.

a comment....
I've been burnt way too many times over the years from after-market and china made parts out there to ever chance that route again. The influx of them in/on the market is the worst I've ever seen.Generally, I buy dealer level(1st tier, oem) quality only. The junk that some places are selling is almost criminal. Nice set of pics. Did you have new valve guides installed?

nice pics, just picked up a 2000 A6 with stripped belt as well, a few ???
where both the bent valves the middle intake? Both on the same head? You replaced the valves? I haven't pulled the heads yet but I bought a set of used heads for $200. Probably just going to swap the heads but may rebuild the originals with donor valves.
Did the belt strip at the crank? Do you know the engine speed when it failed?
