what are the differences? how different is the 2001 engine? i hear that the 2001 has vvt and the 2000 does not. but the literature for the 2000 a4 says that it does in fact have vvt. is it merely a difference in the software that gives the 2001 170hp?
my dealership has two 2000 1.8tq's left and i'm trying to decide whether to take these or whether to order the 2001. the dealer will not negotiate on the 2001. the sticker for the two 1.8tq's they have are $28k and $30k. what could i negotiate this price down to?
thanks for any help you guys can offer me. i'm very excited about possibly getting this car. i started out planning to buy a jetta, but i test drove a 1.8tq and i'm hooked! wow, what a great car!

I believe the software is for the added horsepower while the small engine modifications/additions to existing VVT that make the 2001 even better emissions. I've noticed on other people's 2000 A4's that there are various plumbing differences as well as mass-air flow sensor placement differences as compared to my 99.5 A4. These modifications most likely set the stage for the emissions upgrades audi had planned for the 2001. I don't think the vvt has anything to do with the 170hp... it's purely software and possibly slightly modified exhaust. The vvt implemented on 2001 is more likely meant to improve emissions. Only time will tell but this is what I think ![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
As for other 2001 differences, look at this <a href="https://www.audiworld.com/forum/m/a4/msgs/259707.phtml">previous post</a>.<p><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/larryescortsig.jpg">
