Now I'm confused, but I'm in the middle of changing my fuel pump, and drinking some fine red wine. So you may be right after all....

Yes red wine, pinot noir, solves lots of problems.

My original questions to the OP were to find out if he actually knew what he was doing with timing. It sounded like he just popped the cam sprockets and belt off with no indication that he located TDC etc. He said he marked stuff. Didn't sound like a good way to go. We all know that marking stuff does not work. Stuff moves.

Since the OP has not written back I assume he got it all repaired and it's running like a Swiss watch by now.

Anyway this has been an interesting discussion regarding crank pinning. I'm in favor of it but I have limited experience with Audi timing belts so I err on the side of safety and accuracy.

The instructional video I watched prior to my first 2.8 belt job showed the mechanic ignoring the crank pin step. I did not just to be safe.

Belt length is immaterial. It does nothing to amplify any error.

[QUOTE=Huskerbob;24470443]Did you pin the crank? What did you mark? How did you tell your head gaskets were leaking?[/QUOTE
all the white smoke coming from the tailpipe and didn't use a locking pin
