2000 Grit sandpaper for smoothing paint chips?
Hello all, I've read the carcareonline "how to" on fixing paint chips. My question is this: they recommend using Meguiar's 2000 grit sanding block that I can't find around my area. I have found some 2000 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper at Pep Boys and was wondering if this will do to smooth out the surface after touching up paint chips. Please advise.
Thanks in advance,
lcc

2000 grit will work...after that you will have to buff the car or area with compound to get the scratches out and and then possibly a hand glaze or wax afteryour done buffing..any more questions post..thanks

yes; be very careful and gentle; cut the 2000 into circles the size of a pencil eraser tip on a BRAND NEW eraser. use rubber cement to glue the circles to several pencil erasers (they have to be new so the surface is flat). use them as your small sanding block, using a new one as they get full of grit.
It's a very tedious process if done right, and in most cases I've found that if you have primer so that the metal's protected, it's just as effective and a better use of time to just keep a good coat of wax over the chip. the repairs can be very hard to match on certain colors, since the touchup paint is not an exact match for the factory paint (this has been the case on Mercedes-Benz Brilliant Silver and Audi Melange: Saab Admiral Blue matches perfectly).
